Avant-pop wunderkind Rosie Tee, a composer/performer from Birmingham UK, announces a new collaborative Remix EP aptly entitled ‘RE // EMBRACE’. It features five vastly contrasting reworks of songs from her 2021 EP ‘Earth, Embrace Me In’ by Vanishing Twin, Wildforms, NikNak, Matters and Maya Yenn.
‘Earth, Embrace Me In’ was widely praised as a “mind-bending release” (Earmilk) and “a joy” (BBC Introducing). A collection of bittersweet songs, both cinematic and intimate, that fluttered with angelic synths, swirling around complex jazz drums and melodies, mixed with unexpected twists and turns that lend to Tee’s experimental nature.
Half a year later, this adventure in sound has been furthered by a group of new collaborators, who have completely transformed Tee’s songs for this release. She says of the process “I invited these artists to pick a track from the EP and go wild. I love their work and couldn’t wait to hear how they reinterpreted my music for their own. Their playful approaches have sprung some truly inspiring and unexpected results.”
Defying genre and expectations, the final output is a myriad of remixes that platform the innovative production styles of five creative beings…
The EP opens with ‘Anchors’, remixed by psychedelic royalty Vanishing Twin. Featuring Valentina Magaletti's masterful drumming, this percussive interpretation of 'Anchors' is purely hypnotic. Airy and light, it transports the listener with otherworldly ASMR-like samples and warped synth-cycles throughout. “Remixing Rosie was a time-displaced collaboration – chopping, crushing, flipping and flopping according to our intuition.” - Cathy Lucas, Vanishing Twin.
In the cluster of organic and urban sound dwells Wildforms, the electronic-music apparition of musician Dan Cippico. A fellow Birmingham being, Wildforms uses his signature coarse percussion to sample and violently skew drummer Kai Charenusy’s kit in ‘Swept’, whilst obscuring the melodic materials performed by RIOT String Quartet. “What drew me to Swept was the delicate and thunderous musical elements that comprise it. I was unwell whilst making the remix, so looking back, the process feels like a delirious dream. At the time, I imagined myself as a child aggressively kicking the three elements: Clarinet, Strings and Drums around a huge space, encouraging the chaos, whilst remaining true to the original track.” - Dan Cippico/Wildforms
After sharing a live bill together on tour in Leeds, Rosie Tee became obsessed with the turntable art of Oram Awards winner NikNak. Following this encounter, it was only natural to invite NikNak to bring her energy and flair for slicing and dicing tracks to a remix. Showcasing her fresh take on electronic music that cements her place as a revered member of the UK’s turntable scene, she forges an intense trip-hop version of EP opener ‘Lungs’, utilising its bold string arrangements. “The strings in the original track definitely inspired me to go into a more old school breaks/Portishead route for the reinterpretation. Big thanks to Rosie for entrusting me with her beautiful sounds!" - NikNak
Another wildly different rework of ‘Anchors’ follows by Birmingham electronic duo Matters. Cyclical and pulsating, Matters take elements of techno, psychedelic and trance to weave an all-encompassing sound that provides a new depth to Tee’s dark and lumbering love song for a dying planet. “With our remix we wanted to magnify the many wonderful textural moments that exist within Anchors, using them to help build the backbone of the track. So by focusing on and manipulating some of the smaller details, as well as experimenting with some of our own sounds - we wanted to build something that could also exist within our own world.” - Matters
To close the EP, Rosie invited UK independent producer, singer, and songwriter Maya Yenn to remix her track ‘Emerald’. Having played together in bands as teenagers, Maya and Rosie have always been musically in sync. Inspired by the upbeat productions of Glass Animals and Jungle, Maya shifts the expansive, jazz-tinged sentiments of ‘Emerald’ into realms of tight tropical, summer-fuelled beats. “Working on this remix was honestly some of the most fun I've had in the studio for a long time. I worked on it pretty exclusively for two days straight playing around with Rosie's airy vocals and different sounds and textures. Rosie's sound is so rich and atmospheric, I wanted to keep that richness for the remix but exchanged that luxurious expansiveness for something very energetic and tight for a different feel.“ – Maya Yenn

What a wordsmith this guy is! The tangle of these dry poems with his band's lush sound is moreish. This earns top spot as my most listened to album right now! Rosie Tee
